About this programme
This intermediate course provides a practical understanding of drilling operations and the logistics required to support them. Participants will learn about drilling rig types, the drilling process, well construction, and the logistics of moving equipment, materials, and personnel to remote and offshore drilling locations.
Who Should Attend:
-
Drilling Logistics Coordinators
-
Drilling Engineers and Supervisors
-
Supply Chain Staff Supporting Drilling Campaigns
-
Operations Planners in Upstream Oil and Gas
What you'll walk away with
-
Understand drilling rig types and drilling processes.
-
Manage logistics for drilling materials (casing, tubulars, mud, cement, fuel).
-
Coordinate rig moves and heavy equipment transport.
-
Ensure safety and environmental compliance in drilling logistics.
What we cover, module by module
Module 1: Drilling Fundamentals and Rig Types
-
Types of rigs: land rigs, jack-up rigs, semisubmersibles, drillships, and platform rigs.
-
Rig components: derrick, drawworks, top drive, mud pumps, and BOP stack.
-
The drilling process: spudding, drilling, tripping, casing, cementing, and completion.
-
Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Match rig types to drilling environments (land, shallow water, deepwater, harsh environment) and justify the selection.
Module 2: Drilling Materials and Consumables Logistics
-
Casing and tubing: sizes, grades, threads, and transport requirements.
-
Drilling fluids (mud): water-based, oil-based, and synthetic; bulk and liquid transport.
-
Cement and additives: storage, mixing, and delivery to rig.
-
Fuel, water, and miscellaneous consumables.
-
Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan the logistics for a casing string delivery to a remote land rig, including transport, unloading, and inventory management.
Module 3: Drilling Waste Management and Backloading
-
Types of drilling waste: cuttings, excess mud, contaminated water, and empty containers.
-
On-site treatment vs. off-site disposal.
-
Backloading logistics: waste containers, vessels, and disposal facilities.
-
Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a drilling waste management and backloading plan for an offshore rig, including waste segregation, storage, and disposal logistics.
Module 4: Rig Moves and Heavy Equipment Transport
-
Rig move planning for land rigs: road surveys, permits, escorts, and heavy transport trailers.
-
Offshore rig moves: towing by tugs, anchor handling, and positioning.
-
Critical lifts and heavy equipment transport.
-
Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan a land rig move from one well pad to another (20km), including route survey, transport requirements, and a move schedule.
Module 5: Drilling Logistics Coordination and Performance
-
Just-in-time delivery vs. buffer stock for critical items.
-
Coordination with drilling engineers on material requirements.
-
Key performance indicators for drilling logistics (e.g., downtime due to logistics).
-
Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a drilling logistics performance report, identify root causes of logistics-related downtime, and propose corrective actions.
Where the change lands
Organizational Impacts:
-
Reduced non-productive time (NPT) due to logistics failures.
-
Improved drilling efficiency through timely material delivery.
-
Enhanced safety in drilling operations and transport.
Individual Impacts:
-
Mastery of drilling rig types and components.
-
Expertise in well construction and drilling processes.
-
Skills to plan logistics for casing, tubulars, drilling fluids, and equipment.
