Overview

About this programme

This advanced course provides specialized training on logistics and materials management for large-scale oil and gas capital projects, including greenfield developments, offshore platforms, pipelines, and refinery expansions. Participants will learn to plan and execute the transport, storage, and tracking of heavy and oversized equipment, modules, and bulk materials for complex EPC projects.

Who Should Attend:

  • Project Logistics Managers

  • Materials Management Supervisors

  • EPC Project Planners and Supply Chain Staff

  • Heavy Transport and Module Movement Specialists

Learning outcomes

What you'll walk away with

  • Plan and execute logistics for heavy and oversized oil and gas equipment.

  • Manage module transport from fabrication yard to installation site.

  • Implement materials management systems for project construction.

  • Coordinate last-mile transport to remote construction sites.

Course modules

What we cover, module by module

Module 1: Project Logistics in Oil and Gas

  • Key characteristics: heavy, oversized, sensitive, and high-value cargo.

  • Project phases: FEED, procurement, fabrication, transport, construction, and commissioning.

  • Stakeholders: EPC contractors, fabricators, freight forwarders, and heavy transport specialists.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a large oil and gas project (e.g., offshore platform), map the logistics chain for a major component, and identify critical risks.

Module 2: Heavy and Oversized Cargo Transport

  • Road transport: low-bed trailers, self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), and route surveys.

  • Rail transport: clearances, loading gauges, and special wagons.

  • Ocean transport: heavy-lift vessels, semi-submersible ships, and barges.

  • Air transport: Antonov and other outsized cargo aircraft.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan the transport of a 200-ton pressure vessel from a fabrication yard to a remote refinery site, selecting modes and routes.

Module 3: Module Transport and Installation Logistics

  • Oil and gas modules: process modules, living quarters, and pipe racks.

  • Module load-out, seafastening, and sea transport.

  • Offloading and installation: SPMT skidding, crane lifts, and float-over methods.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop a transport and installation plan for an offshore topsides module, including load-out, sea fastening, and offshore lift.

Module 4: Materials Management for EPC Projects

  • Materials management system: planning, procurement, expediting, receiving, storage, and issuance.

  • Tracking and traceability: barcode, RFID, and ERP systems.

  • Kitting and issuance for construction work packages.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a materials management workflow for an EPC pipeline project, from material requisition to issue to construction crew.

Module 5: Laydown Yards and Construction Warehousing

  • Laydown yard design: layout, surfacing, drainage, and security.

  • Storage for pipes, valves, fittings, structural steel, and electrical/instrumentation.

  • Preservation programs for sensitive equipment.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a laydown yard layout for a 100km pipeline project, including pipe storage, valve storage, and maintenance areas.

Module 6: Customs Clearance and Import Compliance

  • Temporary importation vs. permanent importation.

  • Carnets, ATA carnets, and customs bonds.

  • Managing duty exemptions for oil and gas projects.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Prepare a customs clearance plan for an international shipment of project materials, including documentation and duty exemption applications.

Module 7: Site Logistics and Last-Mile Delivery

  • Access roads, river crossings, and temporary bridges.

  • Coordinating deliveries with construction schedule (just-in-sequence).

  • Managing congestion at limited site access points.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan a week of deliveries to a remote construction site with limited storage, sequencing deliveries exactly to the construction schedule.

Module 8: Spare Parts, Commissioning, and Operations Readiness

  • Handover from project to operations: spare parts and special tools.

  • Commissioning spares and capital spares.

  • Operations readiness and startup inventory.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop a spare parts handover plan from a project to operations, including critical spares, documentation, and training.

Module 9: Project Logistics Risk Management

  • Risk identification: weather, route constraints, customs delays, and security.

  • Contingency planning for transport failures.

  • Insurance for heavy and high-value cargo.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Conduct a risk assessment for an ocean transport of a critical module, identify top risks, and develop mitigation strategies.

Module 10: Logistics Cost Control and Performance Measurement

  • Cost estimating for project logistics.

  • Tracking actual vs. budget and controlling variances.

  • Key performance indicators for project logistics (e.g., on-time delivery, damage rate).

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a project logistics cost report, identify significant overspends, and propose corrective actions.

Impact

Where the change lands

Organizational Impacts:

  • Reduced project delays due to logistics bottlenecks.

  • Lower transport and storage costs through optimized planning.

  • Improved materials availability for construction milestones.

Individual Impacts:

  • Mastery of project logistics for heavy and oversized cargo.
