Course modules

What we cover, module by module

Module 1: Terminal Types and Configurations

  • Crude oil terminals: export and import.

  • Refined product depots: gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil.

  • LNG and LPG terminals.

  • Terminal layout: tank farm, jetty/marine facility, gantry, and pumping stations.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a terminal layout for a refined product depot, including tankage, loading gantries, and receipt facilities.

Module 2: Marine Operations and Vessel Handling

  • Vessel types: crude tankers, product tankers, LNG carriers, and barges.

  • Berth management, mooring, and fendering.

  • Cargo transfer: loading arms, hoses, and vapor recovery.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan a vessel loading operation for a crude oil terminal, including berth allocation, cargo transfer rate, and safety checks.

Module 3: Tank Farm Management and Storage

  • Tank types: fixed roof, floating roof (internal and external), and pressurized spheres.

  • Tank gauging: manual, automatic, and radar systems.

  • Inventory management, mixing, blending, and heating.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Conduct a tank inventory reconciliation, calculating gains/losses from receipt to dispatch and investigating discrepancies.

Module 4: Product Dispatch by Road, Rail, and Pipeline

  • Gantry operations: truck loading arms, metering, and vapor recovery.

  • Rail loading and unloading facilities.

  • Pipeline receipt and dispatch: batched products, interface detection, and pigging.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Schedule truck loading at a product depot with 10 gantry positions and 500 trucks per day, minimizing wait time and optimizing shift staffing.

Module 5: Quality Control, Measurement, and Custody Transfer

  • Sampling, testing, and quality specifications for crude and refined products.

  • Metering systems: Coriolis, turbine, and ultrasonic meters.

  • Custody transfer procedures and loss control.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a custody transfer measurement discrepancy between a vessel and terminal, identify potential causes, and recommend corrective actions.
