Overview

About this programme

This intermediate course provides specialized training on warehouse management and inventory optimization for the oil and gas industry. Participants will learn to manage warehouses for drilling materials, production spares, MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) items, and consumables, using best practices in layout, storage, picking, and inventory control.

Who Should Attend:

  • Warehouse Supervisors in Oil and Gas

  • Inventory and Materials Managers

  • Supply Chain Operations Staff

  • Logistics Coordinators in Upstream and Downstream

Learning outcomes

What you'll walk away with

  • Design and operate oil and gas warehouses for drilling, production, and MRO materials.

  • Implement inventory optimization techniques and cycle counting programs.

  • Manage hazardous materials storage and safety compliance.

  • Integrate warehouse management systems (WMS) with ERP.

Course modules

What we cover, module by module

Module 1: Oil and Gas Warehouse Types and Layout

  • Types: central supply base, field warehouse, satellite storage, and vendor-managed inventory (VMI) hubs.

  • Warehouse layout: receiving, putaway, storage, picking, packing, dispatch, and waste areas.

  • Storage systems: racking, bin shelving, bulk storage, and pallet flow.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a warehouse layout for a remote drilling supply base, including space for tubular goods, chemicals, and MRO spares.

Module 2: Materials Handling and Equipment

  • Heavy handling: forklifts (standard, rough terrain), cranes, and overhead hoists.

  • Pipe and tubular handling: pipe racks, forklift attachments, and slings.

  • Hazardous materials storage and handling (flammable, corrosive, toxic).

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Select material handling equipment for an oil and gas warehouse storing a mix of small parts, heavy tubulars, and chemical drums.

Module 3: Inventory Management and Optimization

  • ABC classification for oil and gas spares.

  • Min-max, reorder point, and safety stock calculations.

  • Slow-moving, obsolete, and surplus inventory management.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze an inventory of 2,000 SKUs, classify them by criticality (ABC or FSN), and recommend min-max levels for top items.

Module 4: Cycle Counting and Inventory Accuracy

  • Cycle counting methods: ABC-based, control group, and random sampling.

  • Root cause analysis for inventory discrepancies.

  • Inventory reconciliation and adjusting for gains/losses.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop a cycle counting program for an oil and gas warehouse, defining counting frequency by ABC class and a process for investigating variances.

Module 5: Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Technology

  • WMS functionality: receiving, directed putaway, inventory tracking, picking, and cycle counting.

  • Barcode scanning and RFID for real-time inventory visibility.

  • Integration with ERP (SAP, Oracle) for materials management.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Implement a receiving process in a simulated WMS, including item verification, putaway assignment, and inventory update.
