About this programme

This intermediate course provides comprehensive training on Education in Emergencies (EiE), ensuring that children and youth in crisis-affected settings have access to safe, quality, and inclusive learning opportunities. Participants will learn to assess education needs, design and implement EiE programs (temporary learning spaces, teacher training, catch-up classes), and coordinate with the Education Cluster.

Module 1: Education in Emergencies Fundamentals

  • Why education matters in emergencies: protection, psychosocial, and development.

  • Key frameworks: INEE Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies.

  • Types of EiE: formal, non-formal, and accelerated education.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze the impact of a crisis on children's education and identify the protection and psychosocial benefits of EiE interventions.

Module 2: EiE Needs Assessment and Analysis

  • Rapid education assessments: tools, methods, and data collection.

  • Identifying barriers to access: safety, distance, cost, discrimination, and lack of facilities.

  • Mapping existing education services and gaps.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Conduct a rapid education needs assessment for a displacement camp, identifying out-of-school children, damaged schools, and teacher availability.

Module 3: Temporary Learning Spaces and Alternative Education

  • Designing temporary learning spaces (tents, prefabs, or community structures).

  • Alternative education models: accelerated learning programs (ALP), home-based learning, and radio/remote education.

  • Equipping learning spaces: furniture, learning materials, and WASH facilities.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a temporary learning space program for 500 children in a displacement camp, including layout, materials, staffing, and WASH integration.

Module 4: Teacher Training and Psychosocial Support

  • Training teachers in emergency pedagogy: child-centered, active, and inclusive methods.

  • Psychosocial support in the classroom: recognizing distress, supportive responses, and referral.

  • Teacher well-being and support in emergencies.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a teacher training module on psychosocial support for a crisis-affected area, including content, methods, and follow-up support.

Module 5: EiE Coordination, Advocacy, and Integration

  • The Education Cluster and coordination with Ministries of Education.

  • Integrating EiE with child protection, health, and WASH.

  • Advocacy for education funding and prioritization in humanitarian response plans.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Simulate an Education Cluster coordination meeting, presenting EiE needs, gaps, and advocacy messages to partners and government.
