About this programme

This advanced course provides comprehensive training on gender mainstreaming across humanitarian programs. Participants will learn to analyze gender dynamics in crises, design gender-responsive interventions, integrate gender across sectors (protection, WASH, shelter, food security), and ensure that humanitarian action addresses the distinct needs of women, girls, men, and boys.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a humanitarian crisis and identify how gender dynamics affect access to assistance, protection risks, and coping strategies.

Module 2: Gender Analysis in Humanitarian Settings

  • Gender analysis frameworks: Harvard, Moser, and IASC frameworks.

  • Data collection: sex- and age-disaggregated data (SADD) and gender-sensitive assessment questions.

  • Analyzing power dynamics, decision-making, and resource access.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Conduct a gender analysis for a displacement setting using a gender analysis matrix, identifying distinct needs and capacities of women, girls, men, and boys.

Module 3: Gender-Responsive Programming Across Sectors

  • Principles of gender-responsive vs. gender-blind programming.

  • Gender integration in WASH: separate facilities, safety, and menstrual hygiene management.

  • Gender in shelter: privacy, safety, and design considerations.

  • Gender in food security: targeting, distribution, and decision-making.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Review a sectoral program (e.g., WASH or shelter) and propose gender-responsive modifications based on a gender analysis.

Module 4: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Risk Mitigation

  • Understanding GBV in humanitarian settings: types, drivers, and consequences.

  • GBV risk mitigation across sectors: safe access, lighting, separate facilities, and confidential complaint mechanisms.

  • Referral pathways and survivor-centered approaches.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Conduct a GBV risk assessment for a camp setting, identifying risks in WASH, shelter, and distribution areas, and propose mitigation measures.

Module 5: Women's Participation and Leadership

  • Barriers to women's participation in humanitarian decision-making.

  • Strategies for meaningful women's participation: quotas, safe spaces, and leadership training.

  • Women-led organizations and local women's groups.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a strategy to increase women's participation in a camp governance committee, including outreach, capacity building, and addressing barriers.

Module 6: Gender and Protection Mainstreaming

  • Integrating gender into protection analysis and programming.

  • Gender-specific protection risks: child marriage, trafficking, sexual violence, and denial of access.

  • Coordinating with GBV and child protection sub-clusters.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Integrate gender considerations into a protection assessment tool, adding gender-sensitive questions and analysis criteria.

Module 7: Gender in Humanitarian Coordination

  • The Gender Standby Capacity Project (GenCap) and gender advisors in clusters.

  • Gender mainstreaming in cluster coordination and humanitarian response plans (HRP).

  • Accountability to affected populations (AAP) and gender.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Simulate a gender integration session in a cluster coordination meeting, proposing gender-responsive actions for each sector's response plan.

Module 8: Gender-Responsive Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Developing gender-sensitive indicators.

  • Collecting sex- and age-disaggregated data (SADD) in M&E.

  • Evaluating gender equality outcomes and unintended consequences.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop a gender-responsive M&E plan for a humanitarian program, including gender-sensitive indicators and a plan for collecting SADD.

Module 9: Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Humanitarian Action

  • Minimum standards for GBV prevention and response in emergencies.

  • Setting up GBV referral pathways and case management.

  • Psychosocial support for GBV survivors.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a GBV referral pathway for a humanitarian response, including community-based reporting, health, psychosocial support, and legal services.

Module 10: Organizational Gender Capacity and Policy

  • Developing a gender policy and action plan for humanitarian organizations.

  • Staff training and capacity building on gender.

  • Gender audits and accountability mechanisms.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop a gender action plan for a humanitarian organization, including training, policy, staffing, and accountability measures.
