Course modules

What we cover, module by module

Module 1: Fundamentals of Humanitarian Logistics

  • Defining humanitarian logistics: disaster response vs. development supply chains.

  • Key principles: speed, appropriateness, accountability, and cost-effectiveness.

  • The humanitarian supply chain: from donor to beneficiary.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze the logistics response to a natural disaster (e.g., earthquake or flood), identifying successes and failures in the supply chain.

Module 2: Emergency Procurement and Sourcing

  • Rapid procurement mechanisms vs. long-term framework agreements.

  • Local, regional, and international sourcing strategies.

  • Managing supplier relationships and pre-qualification.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Develop an emergency procurement plan for a sudden-onset disaster, including a supplier list, pre-agreed pricing, and quality verification protocols.

Module 3: Humanitarian Warehousing and Inventory Management

  • Types of humanitarian warehouses: central, regional, and forward stockpiles.

  • Inventory management for emergency supplies: pre-positioning and rotation.

  • Cold chain for vaccines and temperature-sensitive health supplies.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a warehouse layout for a humanitarian hub, including receipt, storage (ambient and cold), and dispatch zones, with inventory tracking procedures.

Module 4: Transport and Fleet Management in Humanitarian Settings

  • Multi-modal transport: air, road, river, and sometimes animal or foot.

  • Fleet management: vehicle tracking, maintenance, and fuel management.

  • Managing transport in insecure or infrastructure-poor environments.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Plan the transport of relief supplies from a central warehouse to five distribution points in a region with damaged roads and active conflict zones.

Module 5: Last-Mile Distribution and Beneficiary Engagement

  • Distribution models: centralized, mobile, and voucher-based.

  • Security management and access negotiation with local authorities.

  • Accountability to affected populations (AAP) and feedback mechanisms.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a last-mile distribution plan for a refugee camp, including site layout, crowd management, and a feedback system for beneficiaries.
