Course modules

What we cover, module by module

Module 1: Nutrition in Emergencies Fundamentals

  • The causes of malnutrition: immediate, underlying, and basic.

  • Types of malnutrition: acute (wasting), chronic (stunting), underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies.

  • Key standards: Sphere nutrition standards, WHO guidelines, and CMAM framework.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Analyze a nutrition crisis in a displacement setting, identifying the contributing factors and priority interventions.

Module 2: Nutrition Assessment and Surveillance

  • Rapid nutrition assessments and SMART surveys (Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions).

  • Anthropometric measurements: MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference), weight-for-height, and edema.

  • Mortality and morbidity surveillance.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Interpret a SMART survey report, calculating prevalence of global acute malnutrition (GAM) and severe acute malnutrition (SAM), and determining the severity of the crisis.

Module 3: Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)

  • Outpatient Therapeutic Feeding Program (OTP) for uncomplicated SAM.

  • Stabilization Center (SC) for complicated SAM with medical complications.

  • Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and other therapeutic products.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design an OTP for a camp of 50,000 people, including admission criteria, staffing, RUTF requirements, and follow-up schedule.

Module 4: Management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Prevention

  • Targeted Supplementary Feeding Program (TSFP) for MAM.

  • Blanket Supplementary Feeding Program (BSFP) for at-risk populations.

  • Prevention strategies: infant and young child feeding (IYCF), micronutrient supplementation, and food security linkages.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Design a BSFP for children under five and pregnant/lactating women in a food-insecure area, including ration composition and distribution schedule.

Module 5: Nutrition Coordination and Integration

  • The Nutrition Cluster and coordination with health, WASH, and food security clusters.

  • Integrating nutrition into health services (IMCI, CMAM).

  • Monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programs.

  • Case Study/Hands-on Exercise: Simulate a Nutrition Cluster coordination meeting, presenting nutrition data, identifying gaps, and coordinating with WASH and food security partners.
